Description:
The name refers to at least two species of the Capparaceae family: Capparis indica and Capparis odoratissima, both leafy evergreen trees that reach a height of 5 meters and do not lose their leaves during the dry season. In certain spots they appear to be scarce. They produce small, cream-colored flowers and green and brown fruit. The leaves are dark green. The branches were traditionally used to decorate the canopies used in wedding celebrations, in the same way the banana leaf is used today. These days, girls play a game in which they count the dots on the leaves to determine the number of boyfriends they will have. The tree's flowers are not considered visible, and it is said that only children and mutes can see them. Legend has it that if a child cuts off three flowers and takes them to the ocean on Christmas Day, a mermaid will delight in the birth of baby Jesus by playing guitar and singing songs of joy. Legend also has it that when the son of God arrived on Earth, the bright colored leaves of the yaga guie' yaase opened up and tried to hide the son of God. But a magpie betrayed the tree by revealing the secret, and this is why the Virgin Mary put a rope around its neck as a testimony to this treason. When the son of God was caught, the leaves of the tree turned dark, and from that moment on the tree was known as guie' yaase (lit. black flower').
