Description:
The term refers to plants that have generally fleshy leaves arranged like the petals of a rose (rosetophilous) and an inflorescence consisting of a scape with one or more spikes growing off it. The name can be used to refer to a variety of plants, mostly agaves and bromeliads. One example is the Agave angustifolia, which flowers for one month between October and December, before producing a seed. The scape of this plant is sometimes opened and cleaned out for use as a container to transport candles during the pilgrimage to Esquipulas in January. This helps to protect the candles from damage during the pilgrimage. The main rib of this plant is fermented to make mescal and the fiber from the leaves is used in the production of pita fiber.
